Why Study Here A unique preparation course which provides a good grounding for further study in a supportive environment. If traditional routes to further education are not possible, this can provide entry. You will benefit from access to computers, the Learning Resource Centre and intensive tutorial support.
Suitable For Those who want to improve on their GCSE results and further their studies. This is not exam based; achievement of the diploma is centred on portfolios and so there is an emphasis on attendance and portfolio building. Poor attendance could result in withdrawal. Persistence, motivation and taking responsibility for your own learning are key to progress on this course.
Application Method Application followed by individual interview
Entry Requirements 4 GCSEs at grade D including Maths and English Language. Alternatively, you must be able to demonstrate a reason for previous under-achievement such as ill health, home tutoring or bullying. You must be 16 or over and pass an entry assessment.
Content / Overview Improve your GCSE grades and move onto A Levels and vocational courses. Module 1: managing learning using ICT, personal development skills, speaking and listening. Module 2: writing for meaning, punctuation and grammar. Module 3: numbers and using calculations, Maths project. You will have the opportunity to resit some GCSEs and we particularly recommend you retake Maths and English if you have a grade D. You will benefit from intensive tutorial support.
Delivery Method Lectures and discussions, group and individual work, projects and presentations.
Assessment Written projects, presentations and a portfolios of work for submission to external moderators. There are no external exams.
Progression A Levels, other Level 3 courses followed by degrees at the College or university or the world of work.
Additional Information Completion of portfolios is an essential part of the course and assessment is based on this. Regular attendance is essential. There will be opportunities for educational visits or speakers. Please bring a pen and paper to the first class.
All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position. There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding.
