Why Study Here
Our tutors have a combined experience of over 150 years in training new mechanics and rather than focus on just one manufacturer, apprentices work on a wide range of marques and vehicle types. The College benefits from state-of-the-art kit, including Modis Diagnostics, Brake Retardation and Dyno, so we can ensure you're trained in more complex faults and how to identify and repair them using sophisticated diagnostic equipment.

Suitable For
Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above 16years-old whether you are just leaving school, have been working for years or are seeking to start a new career. You just need to be living in England and not taking part in full-time education. There may be different entry requirements depending on the Apprenticeship and the industry sector. However competition for places with employers can be fierce, so you will need to show that you are committed, and aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who would employ you. You also need to be happy to work as both part of a team and individually, and be able to use your own initiative.

Application Method
Application followed by individual interview

Entry Requirements
You should be working in the industry and interested in developing your skills. Good GCSEs are an advantage.

Content / Overview

As an apprentice, you could work for a dealership and focus on a particular manufacturer, or work for an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles. In both, you’ll choose your area of specialisation, whether that’s motorcycles, cars, heavy vehicles or vehicle electrical systems. You’ll be working in a service technician type role, carrying out routine maintenance and basic repairs, as well as identifying and reporting faults.

On the Advanced Level Apprenticeship, you’ll learn about more complex faults and how to identify and repair them using sophisticated diagnostic equipment.

Vehicle repair is challenging, hands-on work – every vehicle will present a new problem to solve. You’ll also need good communication skills in order to explain everything to the customer. But you’ll feel satisfied when the job’s done and that car is back on the road.

Delivery Method
Training is delivered on a one day per week release basis at College where a tutor will monitor your progress.

Assessment
Continuous assessment throughout the course. You create a portfolio of evidence in the workplace and will undertake a small number of unit exams at College.

Progression
You’ll be working in a service technician type role, carrying out routine maintenance and basic repairs, as well as identifying and reporting faults. On completion of the Advanced Level Apprenticeship you could work as a Light Vehicle Diagnostic Technician, Heavy Vehicle Diagnostic Technician, Motorcycle Diagnostic Technician, Auto Electrical Diagnostic Technician, Mobile Electrical Installation Diagnostic Technician or Lift Truck Diagnostic Technician.

Homework
You may have to complete sections of your portfolio outside of College or working hours.

All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding.
