Content / Overview

The course runs on Saturday mornings from 9am -12.30pm and starts on the 7/4/18 completing on the 26/5/18

This is an exciting course, it allows young aspiring chefs to work alongside professional chefs who will be teaching them new skills to a professional standard.

Aimed at young people between 14 - 16 years of age, this course is ideal for those who have a passion and interest in cooking and who wish to develop these skills further so that they can progress on to a professional cookery course in the future.

Learners will be taught the latest up to date skills and techniques relevant to the Hospitality and Catering Industry.

Guildford College gives you the chance to experience a "real" professional kitchen. You'll learn to prepare and cook fresh ingredients under the friendly guidance of our expert, professional chefs.


Course Modules

The course will run for eight weeks and will be delivered in one of our three professional kitchens. The young chefs will learn various cooking and preparation skills as well as kitchen safety and knife skills. The course will begin with an introduction to commercial equipment and how to handle and use equipment safely. You will be covering a range of different foods from vegetables, soups, pastas, sauces, meat, fish desserts and more.

At week eight and as a final treat, the Junior Chefs will have a graduation ceremony where they will be presented with a certificate of achievement. At the graduation ceremony as a Junior Chef graduate, you will be working in our kitchens and preparing and cooking a celebratory meal for four of your guests to show off your skills as a Young Chef of the future.

Entry Requirements 

As a Young Chef of the future you will not need to have had any other training to apply for the course, but we will need your parent/guardian to complete a medical questionnaire which must be received before the start of the course.

Throughout the course you will be required to wear non-slip shoes that cover and protect your feet, black trousers and a white T-shirt. You’ll also need to bring a container to take home your finished dishes to enjoy with your family.

Further Study 

When you are aged 16 you may want to progress to a full time course with us at Guildford College, and complete either a Level 1 or level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery.

Additional Information 

The cost of the 8 week course is £100 per Young Chef.

The course runs on Saturday mornings from 9am -12.30pm and starts on the 7/4/18 completing on the 26/5/18.

All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position.

There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding (identified as 'no fee remission available on this course').
