Army Career On The March For Merrist Wood's First Bursary Student

2 February 2010

The career of the first Army bursary student at Guildford College’s Merrist Wood, Campus marched ahead when he completed his phase one training at Pirbright recently.

After 12 weeks with the Royal Logistics Corps Jamie Beazley, 17, will complete his training as a driver operator at Leconfield Barracks. Then the former First Diploma in Public Services student, who went to school at Glebelands in Cranleigh, will be off to join his unit in Germany. A tour of duty in Afghanistan may follow in 2011.

Public Services lecturer Tracy Lenton said that Merrist Wood was one of the first colleges in the area to offer the Army bursary scheme, in which the Army sponsors the student’s training at the College and employs them afterwards. He said it was a valuable partnership which ensured good quality recruits for the Army.

The Public Services Diploma prepares students physically and mentally to do their basic training in the uniformed public services including Ambulance, Fire and Rescue, the Police Force, Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.
