Apprenticeships

Get hired @ GUILDFORD College
What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are designed so that you can earn and learn at the same time. You learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills and achieving qualifications, whilst earning money at the same time. You may already be working, or if not we can help to find you an employer and you start earning straight away. You usually attend College one day a week (or sometimes in block weeks) and spend the rest of your time in the workplace.

I am really enjoying my work. Before I became an apprentice, I had to work to support myself while I studied. Now I'm learning while I'm working.

Who can do an Apprenticeship?

As long as you live in England and are not taking part in full-time education, Apprenticeships are open to anyone. Because Apprenticeships aren't just based on academic achievement, entry requirements are flexible - practical skills count and your interest in the area of work you've chosen.

What qualities do I need?

To do well on an Apprenticeship, you need to be focused on the career you want and be prepared to work hard to get it. You'll have to show you're serious, committed, and aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who employ you.

I am really enjoying myself, being part of the team. The Apprenticeship is a fantastic way to learn.
How long does it take?

There are two levels. An Apprenticeship takes about two years. An Advanced Apprenticeship usually lasts a further year or can be entered directly, depending on your qualifications and experience.

He has definitely got a future here.

What will I get at the end?

What you learn in your Apprenticeship will vary, but you'll always end up gaining the following:

  • Practical experience, skills and knowledge from working in your chosen type of employment
  • A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), at Level 2 for an Apprenticeship (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grade A-C), or Level 3 for an Advanced Apprenticeship (equivalent to 2 A Levels)
  • Key Skills qualifications, e.g. working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology
  • A technical certificate such as a BTEC National Diploma or a City & Guilds Progression Award (included in most Apprenticeships)
  • Any extra qualifications or requirements that are important for your chosen occupation.

What can I do afterwards?

When you complete an Apprenticeship, you'll be able to show an employer that you have skills, qualifications and dedication. There's also the opportunity to progress on to higher education, either part time or full time with your employer's help and support. It should increase your chances of getting a good rate of pay, and of getting promoted. In the long term, you may decide to take things further and go for further studies, such as a Diploma or a Degree.
