This year’s Guildford College scholarship students celebrate their success in the College’s new learning hub.
High achieving students at Guildford College are being helped to reach their goals with a new scholarship scheme.
The scheme offers £800 to outstanding students with 6 or more GCSEs at grade A. It was originally offered to those applying for A Levels and Creative Studies, but has now been widened and is open to all Guildford College applicants. It is designed to help with the cost of essential items needed for coursework, such as books or equipment; for funding research opportunities or helping broaden the educational experience by funding overseas travel or work experience.
This year’s scholarships have been awarded to students such as Louisa Burton of Guildford, who previously attended Guildford County School before she came to the College. Louisa achieved A grades in AS Level Sociology and Communications and Culture and a B grade in AS Level Business in the summer. She said: “The A Level Academy at Guildford College is a friendly and welcoming place to be. The courses in which I am participating are both challenging and enjoyable. By gaining this scholarship I will be able to maximise my potential by investing in the necessary textbooks and revision material to help me succeed”. Louisa wants to go on to work in business management or marketing.
Aiming to join the army in the medical field, Charlotte Mills, who previously attended Farnham Heath End School, won her scholarship in the area of Social Sciences. Four students were awarded a scholarship for Performing Arts. Gemma Robbins, Francis Maskens and Christina Hobbins are all taking the Dance Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, whilst Holly Popkin is specialising in Musical Theatre. Christina, who is aiming to go to the internationally regarded Urdang Academy, like several of her predecessors from Guildford College, said “I really love Guildford College and the course I am on. The money will help me to get the most out of being at the College”.
Jamie Marsden, who is taking in A Levels in Graphic Design, ICT, Communications and Culture and Fine Art and Melissa Watters, who is taking A Levels in Graphic Design, Photography and English Literature, both hope to become graphic designers and plan on using their money to fund their travel to college and make the most of their studies.
