A group of Computing students at Guildford College recently helped to develop a bespoke new sales and stock system for multinational company Tillingbourne Foods Ltd.
The project came about when the Company’s Head of Finance Jason Waters approached the College to see if they could help to develop an innovative new purchase and sales order and stock management system. Kumar Sinha, who manages the Computing and Systems Development HND, thought that the project was an ideal platform for his students to develop hands on experience of working in industry.
Kumar said: “Our students learned vital skills in overcoming some of the challenges facing current software development projects. Taking the project from its initiation to completion, they learned the importance of scoping, investigation, analysis and design before implementing the solution through a practical and vocational approach in a real commercial environment.”
Jason Waters added: “It's important that study is made as relevant as possible to the real world, and this collaboration hopefully helped the students to gain some insight into the challenges faced by business and how they can be overcome. I knew how the front end of the system needed to look but the students were able to design the structure of the programming system needed to achieve this. The system has been trialled in our office at Tillingbourne and there's no doubt it will dramatically improve our current systems. It has been a pleasure working with Kumar and the students. The College is obviously well run and open to new ideas”.
