The Government funds and regulates adult Further Education and skills training in England. They pay a proportion of the cost to deliver the course and expect the student, or a sponsor, to pay the remaining portion. This is referred to as the ‘tuition fees’ and is what we display on our guide. If a course or a learner is not eligible for government funding the Full Cost /international fees will be liable. The Guildford College Access course provides a fast-track route into university for mature applicants who do not have formal qualifications. The course is validated by Ascentis and therefore has the national kitemark of Access recognition for entry into any British Higher Education institution. The course is taught by highly qualified staff who have considerable experience in teaching adult students.
This programme is designed for mature students who wish to progress to Higher Education at Guildford College or a British university to study for a business related degree e.g. Business Studies, Accounts, Marketing, and possibly Law or Finance (students are advised to check with individual universties if there is a particular course they wish to pursue). Access is appropriate for those returning to education after a number of years, for example, in employment, bringing up a family or having a career break.
Application followed by individual interview
This course is open to suitable candidates who are 19+ years of age and demonstrate sufficient interest and commitment. There are no formal entry requirements, but candidates should have English and preferably Maths GCSE (grades A*-C) or equivalent. You will be invited to discuss your suitability and needs at interview and may be asked to undertake an initial assessment. Additionally, students whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher.
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be employed including lectures, seminars, small group work and class discussions.
You will be expected to work on assignments at home - hours required varies depending on time of year, e.g. 2 - 8 hours per week.
The course is continuously assessed using a variety of assessment methods/exams. You will build up credits throughout the course as unit assignments are completed. Your progress is discussed and monitored in tutorials.
Guidance is given throughout the course in Higher Education opportunities and careers. Assistance in making applications to Higher Education at Guildford College or universities will be provided by personal tutors.
You will be provided with a course handbook detailing the structure and processes of the programme. Guidance is given throughout the course in subject choices, study skills, careers and Higher Education opportunities. Assistance will be given in making applications to university.
All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position.
There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding (identified as 'no fee remission available on this course').
