GC Celebration of Achievement 2018

Principal Jacki Hughes sits with Councillor Richard Billington, Guildford College Group Chair of Governors, John Denning and the stars of the evening, our award winning students

The outstanding achievements of Guildford College students were recently celebrated at an Evening of Celebration.

The event began with a Christmas themed reception complete with festive drinks and sweet treats, baked and served by the College’s Catering students. Beautiful festive floral arrangements added to the celebrations, arranged by talented Floristry students of Merrist Wood College.  Once guests had taken their seats, a dynamic performance from the College’s Performing Arts Dance students opened the evening’s proceedings.

Principal Jacki Hughes gave a warm welcome speech to congratulate all of the student winners, as well as an interesting potted history of the College’s 80 years serving the community, before the prize giving commenced.

Deputy Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Richard Billington, along with Principal Jacki Hughes was delighted to hand out nearly 40 Student of the Year awards to students from each subject area of the college in recognition for their hard work and achievements over the past year, as well as awarding seven Special Achievement and Contribution prizes to students who were nominated for their outstanding efforts or contribution to College life. The College’s Community Award went to two Travel and Tourism students, Laila Zareen and Punam Kharel who, on their way into College, went to the aid of a cyclist who had gone over the handle bars of his bike, hit his head on the road and was bleeding. The students called for help and waited with the man until the ambulance arrived.

Principal Jacki Hughes said,  ‘The very best part of my job is celebrating our student’s achievements, I am very proud of all our award winning students’.

Chair of Governors, John Denning, gave a closing vote of thanks before the College’s Musical Theatre students performed a wonderful rendition of Ben E. King’s Stand by Me.
