students at Guildford College are benefiting from a £600k newly refurbished workshops this year, thanks in part to Enterprise M3, a Local Enterprise Partnership, who co-funded the creation of the College’s new Technology Tower.
Cllr Richard Billington, Deputy Mayor of Guildford was on hand to officially open Technology Tower, along with representatives from Enterprise M3, the Education and Skills Funding Agency and a number of local employers, as well as staff and students from the College.
Featuring carpentry, plumbing, electrical and multi-trades workshops, the five storey building caters for students from Entry Level to Degree Level, as well as apprentices. Technology Tower features bespoke workshops, industry standard resources and was designed in collaboration with local employers who advised the College on the skills they are looking for in the future.
The creation of an AM2 Electrical Assessment centre was part of the proposed developments and will be the last part of the building to open, allowing existing electricians to ensure their skills remain current and meet the latest regulations.
Principal of the Guildford College Group, Jacki Hughes said: “This investment in our construction trades will help to address the critical skills shortage in the industry. It has recently hit the worst recorded level and is predicted to get worse, with the recruitment of new talent failing to keep up with the rate of retirement.”
She went on to say: “Technology Tower has given this core part of our curriculum a permanent home, as well as the opportunity to expand our provision. Despite only opening in September, we have already recruited an additional 50 students in to training for the construction trades. This expansion is set to continue and will inject much needed new blood in to the sector.”
Barney Ely, and Enterprise M3 Board Member and HR Director for Hays said “Guildford is a key town in the Enterprise M3 area with high value businesses and economic success; high quality skills provision is needed to continue to support businesses and the community. The Built Environment is critical to the prosperity of Guildford. We are delighted to invest in The Technology Tower at Guildford College. This investment will enable the College to develop their curriculum to include Environmental Technologies supporting clean growth in our economy.”
