Student Summer-Jane is awarded first place in the Body Art category
Guildford College students, Summer-Jane Jackson and Charlotte Nash, recently won first place in the regional heats of the World Skills Competition held at Highbury College in Portsmouth. This is the third year running that Guildford College Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up students have won this accolade. Fellow student Chloe Madico also placed runner up in the competition.
World Skills is an international competition which showcases the talents of young people from across the globe and encourages them to be the best in their skill of choice. It is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world that truly reflects global industry.
Summer Jane’s category, Body Art, was based around the theme ‘All the Elements’ and her creation took the form of her own interpretation of this theme using a dragon design to tie all the elements together.
Charlotte and Chloe entered into the Commercial Make-Up category and placed 1st and 2nd respectively, with their individual takes on the theme ‘En Vogue’.
Guildford College Media Make-Up tutor, Jaceyann Smith, said: “Once again, I am extremely proud of our students who have achieved such great results at the World Skills UK regional finals. All three girls have displayed outstanding levels of talent and professionalism which will stand them in good stead for the industry. I look forward to seeing how they progress through the competition into the final heats and onwards into successful future careers.”
Body Art winner, Summer-Jane, said: “I’ve really enjoyed working towards the regional finals, which has given me the opportunity to express my creativity and face and body art skills. Achieving first place has made all of my hard work worthwhile”.
Commercial Make-Up winner, Charlotte Nash said, “I really enjoyed competing the World Skills Regional Commercial make-up finals for London and South East. All of my planning and practice has been very worthwhile and I am so excited to have obtained first place. I am now looking forward to the UK National finals and will start my preparation as soon as the theme is released. This will mean working around my studies with my tutor Jaceyann Smith as much as possible to ensure I produce the best commercial make-up look possible. I would like to say a big thank you to my tutor Miss Smith for all of her help and support with the competition.”
Summer-Jane and Charlotte now go through to the World Skills UK Final which is held at the NEC in Birmingham this November. Good luck girls!
